Australia has seven standard mattress sizes, from a single at 92 x 188 cm to a super king at 203 x 203 cm. The chart below lists every size in centimetres and millimetres, along with how much width each person gets when two people share a bed. Top End Mattress stocks six of them, single through to king, and we have included the super king for comparison. Brands vary by a centimetre or two, so always check the exact measurements of the mattress you are buying.

Every Australian Mattress Size Explained

Single Mattress Size (92 x 188 cm)

A single is the smallest standard mattress and the usual first bed for children moving out of a cot. At 188 cm long it suits kids and shorter adults, but many grown adults will find their feet close to the end. Singles fit bunk beds, trundles and small spare rooms. If you are working out the timing for a little one, our guide on when to move your child out of a cot covers the readiness signs. Browse our single mattresses.

Long Single Mattress Size (92 x 203 cm)

A long single is the same width as a single but 15 cm longer, which makes it the same length as a queen or king. It suits tall teenagers and adults who need a single-width bed in a narrow room. It is a size you mostly find in Australia, so look for sheets labelled “long single” rather than standard single sheets. Browse our long single mattresses.

King Single Mattress Size (107 x 203 cm)

A king single is 15 cm wider and 15 cm longer than a standard single. That extra width makes a real difference for teenagers and adults sleeping alone, and the 203 cm length suits most tall sleepers. It is a popular choice for kids’ rooms because a child can grow into it and keep it through their teens. A king single takes its own sheet size, so standard single sheets will not fit. Browse our king single mattresses.

Double Mattress Size (138 x 188 cm)

A double is 138 cm wide, which is comfortable for one adult who likes room to spread out. Two people can share one, but each gets 69 cm of width, which is narrower than a single bed each, and the 188 cm length is short for tall sleepers. Doubles work well in guest rooms and smaller main bedrooms. Browse our double mattresses.

Queen Mattress Size (153 x 203 cm)

The queen is the usual size for couples. At 153 cm wide, each person gets about 76.5 cm, and the 203 cm length suits most adults. If you are deciding whether to upgrade, our guide to choosing between a queen and a king works through room sizes and costs. Browse our queen mattresses.

King Mattress Size (183 x 203 cm)

A king gives each sleeper about 91.5 cm of width, roughly the width of a single bed each. It is 30 cm wider than a queen, so it needs a bigger room, but couples who want their own space, or who often share the bed with a child, tend to find it worth it. Browse our king mattresses.

Super King Mattress Size (203 x 203 cm)

A super king is a square mattress, 203 cm each way, giving each person just over a metre of width. It needs a large room, and frames and bedding are harder to find. The Top End Mattress range runs from single to king, so we have listed the super king here for comparison only.

Which Mattress Size Do You Need?

Sleeping Alone

For children and small rooms, a single or long single does the job. For adults sleeping alone, a king single or a double gives more room. Keep length in mind: a king single and a long single are the same length as a queen (203 cm), while a double is 15 cm shorter.

Sleeping as a Couple

For two people, width per person is the number that matters. A double gives you 69 cm each, a queen 76.5 cm and a king 91.5 cm. If one of you is a restless sleeper, or the kids pile in on weekend mornings, the extra 15 cm each that a king offers over a queen is easy to notice. Our queen vs king guide covers the rest of that decision.

Tall Sleepers

If you are tall, stick to the 203 cm sizes: long single, king single, queen, king or super king. A common rule of thumb is to choose a mattress about 10 to 15 cm longer than your height, which puts the 188 cm single and double at their limit for anyone much over 175 cm.

Children and Teens

Most children move from a cot into a single. As they grow, a king single or long single gives them a bed they can keep into their teens, and the extra width of a king single is handy for sleepovers and story time.

Hot Sleepers in the Top End

In Darwin’s heat, space between sleepers matters more than it does down south. Every extra centimetre of width is space your partner’s body heat is not taking up, so couples who sleep hot often find that going up a size makes a noticeable difference. What the mattress is made of matters too, and our guides to what actually keeps you cool and gel foam vs latex vs pocket springs cover that side.

Will It Fit? Measuring Your Room and the Way In

How Much Room Each Size Needs

Allow about 60 cm of walking space on each side of the bed you will use and at the foot of the bed, then add room for bedside tables, wardrobes and the door swing. Measure the bed frame as well as the mattress, because frames and bedheads add to the footprint.

For a single, long single, king single or double, take the width and length from the chart above, add 60 cm for each side you will walk along and 60 cm at the foot, and check the result against your room. For couples, the queen vs king guide linked above recommends a room of at least 3.0 m x 3.5 m for a queen and 3.5 m x 3.8 m for a king, and more once bedside tables go in.

Fans and Air-Conditioning

When a bigger bed changes your layout, think about where the ceiling fan and split system sit. Try to keep the bed under the fan and out of the direct stream of the air-conditioner, and check that a larger bed will not block the unit’s airflow or a window you rely on for a breeze.

Check the Path Into the House

Every size from long single to king is 203 cm long, and a king is 183 cm wide. Measure doorways, hallways, tight stair turns and any lift before you choose. A pocket spring mattress cannot be folded the way some foam mattresses can, so the way in matters as much as the room.

Australian vs US and UK Sizes: Why a Queen Is Not Always a Queen

If you are buying sheets, a frame or a mattress from an overseas website, the size names do not line up. A US king is 10 cm wider than an Australian king, and a UK king is roughly the size of an Australian queen. Always shop in centimetres.

US sizes are converted from inches and rounded to the nearest centimetre.

Sheets and Mattress Height

Sheets are sold by size name, but a fitted sheet also has to be deep enough for your mattress. Mattress height varies a lot between models, so measure yours, or check the product details, before buying fitted sheets. This matters most with deeper pillow-top and pocket spring mattresses.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size is a queen mattress in Australia?

A standard Australian queen mattress is 153 cm wide and 203 cm long, although some brands list it as 152 cm wide. When two people share, each gets about 76.5 cm of width.

What size is a double mattress?

An Australian double is 138 cm wide and 188 cm long, although some brands list 187 cm. It is 15 cm narrower and 15 cm shorter than a queen.

What size is a single mattress?

A standard single is 92 cm wide and 188 cm long (some brands list 187 cm). A long single is the same width but 203 cm long, and a king single is 107 x 203 cm.

What is the difference between a single and a king single?

A king single is 15 cm wider and 15 cm longer than a single: 107 x 203 cm compared with 92 x 188 cm. It takes its own sheet size, so single sheets will not fit.

Is a double bed the same as a queen?

No. A queen is 153 x 203 cm and a double is 138 x 188 cm, so a queen is 15 cm wider and 15 cm longer. Queen sheets will not fit a double properly, and double sheets will not fit a queen.

Do two single beds make a king?

Not quite. Two singles side by side measure 184 x 188 cm, which matches a king’s width but is 15 cm shorter. Two long singles make 184 x 203 cm, within a centimetre of a standard king.
